Beta Testing — a Step Forward, Backward or Sideways for QA?

We will look at a beta testing process of a large company's products from all angles, going over all the obvious and non-obvious features of this process. We will take a critical and pragmatic look at whether beta is an addition to quality assurance, a potential substitute for internal testing, or a "crutch" to imperfect QA.
